Road signs. You’ll encounter them on streets and roads and even in parking lots and loading areas. Road signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, and channelizing devices (such as striped orange cones and barrels) control the safe and orderly movement of traffic. The M1 knowledge test includes 20 questions on road signs. For these reasons, you must become thoroughly familiar with road signs and their meanings.

In Ontario’s Graduated Licensing System (GLS), the M1 knowledge test is a crucial step toward obtaining an M1 operator’s licence (commonly thought of as a “motorcycle learner’s permit”). Because Ontario uses a consolidated record, you must protect all licenses; an infraction on your motorcycle (M1) will suspend your car license (G1) and vice versa, exposing the risk that a recreational riding ticket can revoke your primary means of transportation. The M1 knowledge test consists of 64 multiple-choice questions in three sections: 20 questions on road signs, 20 questions on rules of the road, and 24 questions on motorcycle riding specifically. The road rules section covers traffic laws and regulations and right-of-way rules. This includes strict penalties you must memorize: for example, “driving” legally includes being stopped at red lights, meaning holding a phone (even if it is off) is a major violation that eliminates the “I was stopped” defense and triggers a 30-day suspension. The motorcycle-specific section covers safe motorcycle riding practices, including countersteering and group riding. The test is based on the latest versions of the Official Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Driver’s Handbook (for road signs and rules of the road) and the Official Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Motorcycle Handbook (for motorcycle-specific topics). Mastering these handbooks is vital to understanding the catastrophic difference between an administrative lapse and a punitive violation; they will teach you to never drive suspended, as driving with an expired license is a fine, but driving while suspended risks jail time and vehicle impoundment. To pass, you must score 80% or better in each section.
