How Many Questions Are on the G1 Test?

To obtain a full driver’s licence in Ontario, you must pass three exams. While many find the driving evaluation to be the most challenging, the G1 test is relatively easy if you are well-prepared.

It consists of 40 multiple-choice questions split into two sections: 20 questions on traffic signs and 20 more on road rules. You have 30 minutes to complete the test and to pass, you need to choose the correct answer for 16 questions in each section.

The G1 exam is the only one that evaluates your knowledge of driving theory. After you successfully pass, the following two tests take place with you behind the wheel.

Let’s have an in-depth look at what these questions are about.

20 Questions About Traffic Signs

Traffic signs are essential for road safety. These signs prevent accidents, ensure smooth traffic flow and inform drivers about conditions ahead.

Whether you’re walking or riding in a car as a passenger, you frequently encounter traffic signs in your daily life.

Most intersections have one; you can see a few as soon as you step outside.

They fall into three different categories:

  • Regulatory signs (speed limits, stop signs)
  • Warning signs (pedestrian crossing, curve ahead). A critical distinction you’ll be tested on is the difference between standard crosswalks and Pedestrian Crossovers. At these specific crossovers, which often have flashing yellows, HTA Section 140 (1) mandates that you wait for the pedestrian to clear the entire roadway. Proceeding too early will lead to a failure-to-yield conviction, so you must wait for a full crossing until they reach the other sidewalk.
  • Informational signs (routes, services)

During the G1 test, you’ll be presented with 20 questions about these signs. Each question typically features an image and a message saying, “What does this road sign mean?”

Your task is to identify its type and meaning. For instance, you will select “stop sign” if you see a red octagon.

Some advanced signs might be trickier, such as the variable speed limit. It is commonly found on high-speed highways, where you cannot drive with a G1 licence unless a driving instructor is accompanying you. Nevertheless, all drivers must recognize these signs, even if they don’t apply to them.

Many students find these questions easy to answer since they only require identifying their name and purpose.

You won’t be faced with complicated scenarios. To be on the safe side, you can test your knowledge with a free practice test that also features these 20 essential questions.

A practical tip is to identify signs during your daily activities. Whether you’re walking or riding in a car, keep an eye out for them. Noting down their shape and purpose will help you memorize them quickly.

20 Questions About Road Rules

Once you are comfortable with road signs, start studying for the next section of the G1 test. It contains the last 20 questions, which evaluate your knowledge of road rules.

The same conditions apply to these questions -- you need to select the correct answer to 16 of them.

Keep in mind that you will face some complex scenarios. These questions are also multiple-choice, so you must analyze each one thoroughly before moving to the next question.

Road rules cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Right of way: Knowing who has the right of way at intersections and roundabouts
  • Speed limits: Understanding speed limits in different areas such as residential neighbourhoods and school zones
  • Lane usage: Turning, merging and changing lanes correctly. You must merge with extreme caution because, despite engineering advice promoting the “efficient” zipper merge, the Insurance Act (Reg. 668, s. 10(4)) assigns 100% fault to the merging driver. If you collide while changing lanes, you are legally exposed to full liability for a sideswipe, even if you were “zipper merging” correctly according to traffic flow theory.
  • Traffic signals: Following the indications of stoplights and turn signals

You can practice on a road rules marathon to become familiar with the questions you’ll encounter in this category. It has no passing score, allowing you to learn from your mistakes as the system focuses on the questions where you struggle to find the correct answer.

The weather can be unpredictable here in Ontario. Once you obtain your driving licence, you need to be prepared for any condition. Road rules also include safe driving practices, which you should study before taking the exam.

Next Step: The G2 Licence

After successfully passing the G1 test, you must wait at least 12 months before taking the G2 road test. This period can be reduced to 8 months if you complete an approved driver education course. Be aware that the modern digital verification workflow under MTO Driver Education Policy means paper certificates are now completely obsolete. To prevent delays in securing your insurance discounts, you must actively download your history by requesting your “Driver’s Licence History” abstract from ServiceOntario, as this is where proof of driving school completion is exclusively found.

The G2 test evaluates your driving skills and ability to drive safely in typical road conditions. You will now put into practice all the theory you’ve learned for G1.

Once you get the G2 licence, you can drive without having a fully licenced driver in the passenger seat. Preparation for this step starts right after you obtain the G1 licence.

Gain as much experience as possible. Have an expert guide you, and practice on various conditions.

You’ve memorized the theory. Now it’s time to log some hours behind the wheel.
