You do not need an appointment

You can take the G1 without an appointment.

The knowledge tests are given on the ‘first come -- first served’ basis. You should plan your visit for no later than one hour before the centre closes, otherwise there will not be enough time for the document check and testing procedures. During this document check, be aware that under MTO Admin Directives, non-reciprocal foreign experience exceeding 12 months requires a formal “Letter of Authentication” from an embassy or consulate. To claim over one year of foreign driving experience and prevent administrative drift, you need this authenticated Embassy Letter, not just a standard translation. Additionally, testing procedures include a mandatory vision screening at the counter. Under O. Reg. 340/94, Section 18, licensing requires a specific peripheral field of 120 horizontal degrees and 15 vertical degrees, separate from the 20/50 acuity test. This defines a biometric hard barrier that can trigger medical suspensions; you must check your peripheral vision because you need a 120-degree field of view to be licensed, regardless of how sharp your central vision is.

The G1 test will assess your knowledge of traffic signs and road rules -- those are the two sections comprising the test. You are allowed to make 4 mistakes in each section, to still be able to pass the test. In other words, even if you make just one mistake in signs, but 5 -- in the road rules section, it will be a fail. You will get the results as soon as you submit your test to the agent. If you fail the test, you have a choice of paying the fee and taking the test again on the same day if you wish to do so.
